The intersection of art and conservation is a rare but impactful collaboration that shapes both cultural and environmental landscapes. In the film industry, where glamour and glitz often take center stage, there are individuals whose contributions extend beyond the silver screen, merging creativity with advocacy for crucial causes. Wildlife conservation, particularly the preservation of apex predators like tigers and leopards, requires relentless dedication, scientific knowledge, and a passion for nature. Such efforts often demand not only financial investment but also a deep personal commitment to environmental stewardship.
In India, a country with a rich biodiversity and a substantial population of big cats, the challenge of conservation is multifaceted. Human encroachment, poaching, and habitat destruction pose significant threats to wildlife. Yet, amidst these challenges, there are success stories driven by individuals who leverage their influence and resources to make a difference. These stories inspire collective action and highlight the role that diverse sectors, including the arts, can play in environmental conservation.
One such remarkable story is that of Abhishek Ray, a celebrated Bollywood composer and a dedicated wildlife conservationist. Known for his musical contributions to iconic films such as Paan Singh Tomar, I Am Kalam, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Welcome Back, Shagird, Haasil, Life is Good and Yeh Saali Zindagi, Ray has carved out a unique niche for himself. Alongside Bollywood, Ray is also known for award winning solo albums with Gulzar, Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam and other legends. Beyond his musical achievements, he is globally recognized as the founder of the esteemed Sitabani Wildlife Reserve, a testament to his lifelong commitment to tiger and leopard conservation.
Ray’s journey into wildlife conservation began in his early teens when he became a government-certified tiger and leopard tracker, participating in tiger censuses across various Indian reserves. His dedication to the cause has earned him numerous accolades, including the Swabhiman Bharat award and the prestigious Amazing Indian award, presented by the Vice President of India. He also received a letter of appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging his groundbreaking work in conservation.
Abhishek Ray’s passion for wildlife led him to a transformative encounter with a barren hill adjacent to the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The land, ravaged by years of slash-and-burn agriculture, was surrounded by dense Sal forest and seemed destined for restoration. “A while back, I chanced upon this barren hill adjacent to Corbett Tiger Reserve which had been abused by years of slash and burn agriculture. The hill was surrounded by dense Sal forest. So in my eyes, it was screaming to be returned back to the wild. My childhood dream of creating a haven for wildlife saw manifestation in this, and I utilized all my savings from Bollywood in buying it off and then painstakingly rewilding it. When human interference was removed, nature took over,” recounts Ray.
Through initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and the creation of several freshwater bodies, Ray began the arduous process of re-wilding the land. His efforts attracted various wildlife species, transforming the barren hill into a thriving ecosystem. He named this private forest the Sitabani WildlifeReserve. Gradually, ungulates like Sambar, Ghoral, and barking deer began to inhabit the area, followed by apex predators, thus re-establishing the tiger-leopard corridor.
In 2014, a significant milestone was achieved when a wild tigress gave birth to cubs in Sitabani, marking the reserve as the world’s first re-wilded private estate with wild tiger and leopard presence. Inspired by this success, Ray established a wildlife awareness center, inviting nature enthusiasts to learn about tiger and leopard conservation. His efforts further culminated in the composition of India’s tiger anthem and, more recently, the national cheetah anthem for the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
Ray’s contributions have also garnered international recognition. He was approached by the United Nations and the Government of India to create the branding anthem and film for the prestigious International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), a project envisioned by Prime Minister Modi to unite 97 big catholding countries worldwide.
Reflecting on his dual roles in music and conservation, Ray states, “Tiger numbers are an accurate indicator of the freshwater and environmental health of India. Despite being the most populous country, we are home to the five big cats of the world (tiger, lion, leopard, cheetah, snow leopard). I am proud of India’s conservation record and ethos and will continue defending our rich wildlife diversity till my last breath.”
Through his relentless dedication, Abhishek Ray has not only elevated the standards of wildlife conservation in India but also set an inspiring example for leveraging one’s talents and resources to foster positive environmental change. His story is a testament to the profound impact that individuals can have when they commit to a cause greater than themselves.
