Weavers Studio presents the next edition of its monthly Textile Talks, featuring a presentation by filmmaker, scholar, and author Sangeeta Datta, titled Towards a Signature Visual Aesthetic: Colour, Texture, Design, Fabric in the World of Rituparno Ghosh. The session explores how one of India’s most influential filmmakers shaped a distinct visual language through his nuanced engagement with costume, textiles, set design, colour, and material detail.
Drawing from close collaborations and first-hand experience, Sangeeta Datta traces Ghosh’s journey from intimate middle-class contemporary narratives to richly layered Tagorean historicals and performance-driven cinema. The talk also reflects on Ghosh’s personal evolution as a cultural figure whose exploration of gender fluidity, costume, jewellery, and fabric positioned him not only as a filmmaker but also as a style icon whose aesthetic continues to influence cinema, fashion, and visual culture today.
For audiences, the presentation offers a rare behind-the-scenes understanding of how textiles and design shape cinematic storytelling, providing insights valuable to students of film, fashion, art, and cultural history.
